They thought that Russia would take about 6 weeks to mobilise but instead they took only 6 days which was much faster than expected.

The first reason is that in order to invade France the German first and second armies were in Belgium needing to get to and conquer Fort Liege.

And the diplomats did not see it at all They could have predicted Englands entrance into the war by virtue of invading Belgium. Reason 1 Whilst the plan looked good on paper it underestimated the distances the German Army had to cover in the strict timetable. It would have required a flawless unfolding of events which never occurs in wartime.
The BEF played a huge part in this war as they were able to hold back the Germans even though there were so few of them. They had no plan against the Russians in the Schlieffen Plan. The Schlieffen Plan had failed.
The German troops on the extreme right were exhausted after several weeks of marching and fighting and were unable to keep up the pace.
